Marta Cendra i Vilardebo studied architecture at TU Delft, ETH Zurich and UPC-ETSAB in Barcelona, where she graduated with honours in 2020. She currently develops her work between Spain and The Netherlands, where she resides.
She understands architecture as an essentially contextual practice,
conscious
of the memory that it inherits
and responsible,
for the ancestor that it will become.
Her interest lies, therefore, in exploring how new sustainable building methods can translate into a contemporary architectural language. One that remains attentive to the character of the place in which it is rooted and is capable of enduring time, allowing weather, use, and memory to become part of its character. Seeing sustainability as a non-questionable precondition and not as a goal in itself.
The first step in any project is assessing the value of what is already there, always prioritising restoration or adaptation over new construction.
Her method is based on searching for clarity and consistency across the different scales of her field of work: urbanism, architecture and interior design. It aims to offer thoughtful design solutions that meet the needs of those who will inhabit, use, or just encounter each space.
It is a pursuit of quiet architecture, specific enough to belong, and discreet enough to create room for all forms of living within our increasing plural society. Allowing life around it to be the one who makes the noise.
